In order for you to insult me I would first have to value your opinion. – Unknown
“If I tell the world what my dreams and goals are, what might they think of me? If I go after my dreams and share my thoughts, how will people judge me? Oh I better not do that, because I don’t want to be criticized!”
Too many of us think similar thoughts like this on a daily basis. Worrying and fretting over what somebody else might think of us. Stressing over the irrelevant opinions strangers have of us.
Giving too much of a fuck about what he/she or they might say. Giving a damn about the opinions of people we don’t even know.
Backing down from the things we want to do because it’s so much safer, comfortable, and easier compared to the alternative.
To avoid criticism, say nothing, do nothing, be nothing. – Aristotle
Just so you know, this is the definition of an opinion. The same thing you’re allowing to stand in the way of what YOU want to do or say.
A view or judgement formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.
See that? An opinion is a JUDGMENT formed about something. And it’s not necessarily based on FACT or knowledge.
What that means is the same criticism and judgments you’re terrified of experiencing aren’t even real. And even If you are to be judged and criticized, which you will, it doesn’t make the person judging or criticizing you right or wrong.
It just makes them another human being with a strong opinion, whether negative or not. And it just makes them another person with a lot to say and little facts to back up what it is they’re negatively saying about you.
That’s just the universal truth
Putting that into perspective, is that really something you want to give a fuck about? Is that really something you want to pay attention to, worry about, get upset about, and spend your time stressing about?
Is that something you’ll allow to get in the way of the things you want to do with your life, all because 1, 10, or 1000+ people disagree with you? All because a set amount of people don’t like you regardless of how much you try to please them?
When I finally realized this, I stopped giving a damn about what people thought of me, my actions, my ways of doing things, and everything in between. And I’ve been driving at full speed since coming to that realization, which has helped my confidence and self esteem tremendously.
Opinions Are Made Up, So Why Care About What People Think
J.K Rowling is known for her fiction writing and books, like the Harry Potter series. And just like the Harry Potter series and fiction in general, opinions are MADE UP.
When something happens in a cartoon, you don’t take it seriously because after all, it’s all made up and is nothing but a fantasy that someone thought up in their mind, and brought it to fruition.
The same way you wouldn’t take a cartoon seriously, is the same way you shouldn’t take opinions seriously, especially when they’re negative. Because just like cartoons and the Harry Potter series, it’s all made up.
It may be real to the person with the opinions, but if it’s not based on facts, then you have nothing to worry about. And you have no reason to be so hesitant towards the things you want to do.
